The Ark: Asylum Street Spankers

Offbeat, neohippie dance music by this acoustic septet from Austin, Texas, that sets goofy lyrics to a high-spirited amalgam of blues, hot jazz, ragtime, old-time country, and just about any other genre of pre-WW II American music it can find. Led by singer-songwriter (and washboard player) Wammo and vocalist Christina Marrs, the band features guitars, bass, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, kazoo, and saw. $17.50. [venue info]

The Black Pearl: Jody Raffoul

Canadian pop-rock singer-songwriter who’s been described as a hybrid of Bono and Bruce Springsteen. He is joined by backup vocalist and guitarist Wes Buckley. [venue info]

The Blind Pig: Mass Solo Revolt

Athens, Georgia, experimental postpunk band. Opening acts are Bars of Gold, a Ferndale pop-rock quintet, and Wildcatting, a Downriver punk band. [venue info]

The Habitat Ultralounge: Soulstice

Hard-driving horn-fueled funk dance band from East Lansing. [venue info]

Live at PJ's: Los Gatos

Mambos and cha-chas by this local Latin jazz band led by drummer Pete Siers that specializes in the music of Cal Tjader, the late San Francisco vibes player who ignited the 1950s mambo craze. With beginning (8:45 p.m.) & intermediate (10 p.m.) dance lessons and a dance contest (11 p.m.) with prizes. [venue info]
